Hobart, your start to a Tasmanian adventure.
Rugged Hobart is a city of history and the sea. Shadowed by the craggy peak of Mount Wellington and neighboured by Tasmania’s largest area of real Aussie wilderness, Tasmania’s capital has many stories to tell about settlement of the island and the entire country. It also has a growing reputation as a centre for excellent food and wine, and a growing arts scene.
The central area of Hobart is right at the river mouth, and it is there one will find the best shopping, eateries and other urban entertainment. On the riverbank are the Queens Domain and Royal Botanical Gardens, and on the coastline a lovely waterfront area, home to the Maritime Museum of Tasmania which tells the remarkable story of Hobart as an important port. At Salamanca Place near the wharves is the site of the Salamanca Market which takes place every Saturday, and behind there is the historical Battery Point suburb which is known for great eateries. This area is a hub of cultural and arts festivals all year round.
Hobart’s suburbs spread along the riverbanks and the river mouth , from Kingston and its beach on the estuary to Bridgewater which is the last spot of civilisation on the river before it enters the wild. To the west of Hobart is a huge area made up of several National Parks which covers almost a third of Tasmania. Hobart’s proximity to this untouched natural playground makes it a launching pad for the adventurous and intrepid visitors to Tasmania.
Hobart is the gateway via air to all of Tasmania, with the island’s biggest airport being located there. A campervan hire from there can lead to an exploration of Tasmania’s great southwestern wilderness, or a scenic drive across the island to Devonport and Launceston. Tasmania is truly a wonderful place for a camping holiday!
